Community Contributions

In recent years, Hoopes has worked closely with community school children as well as volunteers and educators to create a unique collection of tile mosaics. According to Hoopes, spending the time to create significant pieces of public art with young students is an investment in the future of artistic and cultural development in the community.

Eco-Mosaic Project

Bowen Island Community School, 2014

The theme of this mosaic was inspired by students' persepctives of their local environment and depicts the life cycles of local plant and animal species. With the help of teachers and volunteers, Hoopes and the 308 students involved in the project created five 20" x 42" mosaics and one 20" x 92" mosaic that now enhance the concrete benches in the Outdoor Learning Center at the Bowen Island Community School.

Spirit of Bowen Mosaic Project

Bowen Island Community School, 2010

The theme of this mosaic was a combination of culture, athleticisim and sustainability. The inspiration for the mosaic was drawn from several drawing assignments relating to the subject. Elements from this mosaic were taken directly from the students' drawings, based on suggestions from the student-run mosaic committee. Hoopes then prepared several possible design options, which were evaluated by the school pricipal, the teachers, the students and the community coordinator.

Muriel Nielson Memorial Park Project

Bowen Island Community School, 2009

This 4' x 6' pebble mosaic was designed and executed by artist Bill Hoopes to pay homage to Muriel Nielson's ongoing contributions to the children of Bowen Island. The mosaic patio was created using pebbles collected on Bowen Island and is a lovely feature of the Memorial Garden.

Change in the Wind Mosaic Project

Island Pacific School, 2008

This 4 X 8' project designed by Bill Hoopes was executed by the grade 8-9 students at Island Pacifc School on Bowen Island, B.C. Using glass tile donated by InterStyle tile the project was completed in less than two weeks. The mural hangs outside on the wall of the school.

Garden Mosaic Project

Bowen Island Community School, 2007

Inspired by the content of the students' curriculum, as well as the natural beauty of Bowen Island, this project was created by 6-7th grade students at Bowen Island Community School. Together with teachers and other volunteers Bill worked with the students to create a large-scale (96" x 144") glass tile mosaic which is mounted on the exterior wall of the school.
